I pinned.
I googled.
I researched and researched, just like all of us mommas do before the “BIG” day.
I packed a large suitcase that was neatly organized and labeled just in case my husband was the one going through my bag getting something for me and I was confident in everything that I had packed.
However, I did not use half the stuff that I brought.
I chose not to breastfeed. I had a 7 month at home and wasn’t prepared to commit to nursing and pumping, so I did not bring a pump.
Here is everything that I ACTUALLY used after giving a vaginal birth along with some helpful tips.
We actually purchased this charger for our travel adoption. It was so useful in the NICU that I knew that we would need it for our stay with the birth of our second son. It charges anything with a USB cable and is very handy! Dual USB Portable Charger
I did not pack the entire pack of these…just like 5 because I knew the hospital would provide some but just in case I brought these. They are light and extra long for coverage which you will definitely need! Stayfree Ultra Thin Overnight Pads with Wings, For Women, Reliable Protection and Absorbency of Feminine Moisture, Leaks and Periods, 40 count – Pack of 3
The hospital had Dermoplast so I didn’t end up having to use the one that I packed but if they hadn’t provided it I probably would have asked my husband to go out and get some. Dermoplast Pain & Itch Spray, 2.75 Ounce (Pack of 1) Can
Another item the hospital provided but is a necessity for comfort. Tucks Md Cool Hemorrhoid Pad, 100 Count

I bring my portable fan with me every time I travel. I have to have it to sleep but I also knew that there was a pretty good chance that I was going to be sick during labor, delivery and recovery. This fan can be easily attached to your bedside and can be turned on and off to your liking. SkyGenius Battery Operated Clip on Mini Desk Fan, Black
I packed these disposable underwear instead of my own because I read that you will ruin your underwear if you wear them after delivery. I don’t know if that is true but I really didn’t care to try. These were affordable, thick and provided tummy control and I wore them starting day 2 of recovery. The hospital does have disposable underwear for you. HASOCARE Disposable Moisture Wicking Briefs (Without pad) for Women 7 Count
I chose not to breastfeed. These were great to prevent leaking on clothes. I did not pack the entire box to conserve space. Lansinoh Ultimate Protection Disposable Nursing Pads, 50 count
I bought two of these and they were so great! They were long and comfortable and I didn’t get too hot wearing them. You will have nurses coming in frequently to check on you and wearing a dress or gown is so much easier than having to uncomfortable pull down your pants every time. Amazon Brand – Daily Ritual Women’s Jersey Short-Sleeve Boxy Pocket T-Shirt Dress, Black, Medium
You will be sore. Your neck, back, shoulders, legs, hips, well EVERY THING! This little heating pad is a great size for upper back, lower back and abdominal pain. Consult you nurse before using. Sunbeam Heating Pad for Pain Relief | Standard Size Ultra-Soft, 3 Heat Settings with Auto-Off and Straps | Beige, 12-Inch x 15-Inch
Other things I used…
- Shampoo, conditioner, body wash (I was advised not to use body wash on certain areas and to gently wash with just water for the first three days)
- Hair brush
- Hair ties
- Socks with grips on the bottom (They will take yours off and give you theirs if you don’t have grips on bottom, at least that was my experience but it made sense)
- Deodorant
- Body Spray
- Lotion
- Make up (I only used it on the day they had their photographer come in) To be honest…I had just spent 18 hours in labor and it took every bit of the recovery time in the hospital to do just that, recover. Make-up was the last thing I was thinking about!
- Sweater
- Blanket
- Pillow
- House shoes or slippers
- Riding home outfit (sweatpants and sweatshirt, whatever is the most comfortable)
TIPS FOR YOUR HOSPITAL STAY
- Designate a family member or friend to bring you your favorite drinks and snacks to hospital so that you don’t have to worry about packing them. You can provide them with the items and simple request they deliver them when they visit or give them a list. This will ensure that you have snacks and drinks but wont’s have to worry about packing them
- The nursery is there for a reason! You are officially a rocks star super human now for delivering a human and you need your rest! You can enjoy your little one more if you are not deliriously tired.
- ASK YOUR QUESTIONS! There is no such thing as a stupid question! ASK!
- Use your nurse! They are wonderful resources and have soooo much knowledge! Ask them for help, tips and suggestions!
- It is OK to turn away quests. This is your time and you need rest and healing.

I highly support Dermoplast and Tucks in every mom to be’s hospital bag . I do not know what I would have done without either and would not wish their absence on anyone.

I am glad it was useful! I wish I had known all the things I didn’t need before I packed all my belongings with me to the hospital!
